6 sights around Glücksburg – what to see in summer
Glücksburg sits on the Flensburg Fjord, roughly 10 kilometres north of Flensburg and about 7 kilometres from the Danish border. The seaside resort combines a Renaissance water castle, an unspoilt peninsula, one of Schleswig-Holstein's oldest beach promenades and direct access to Denmark – all reachable without a car or with short drives from the Ostseelodges.
Schloss Glücksburg
The white 16th-century water palace is situated on an island in the palace pond and is considered one of the most significant Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. It was the ancestral seat of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, from which the Danish and Norwegian royal families descend. The castle is open to the public; current opening hours and admission prices can be inquired directly at the castle.
Strandpromenade & Kurpark Glücksburg
Glücksburg's beach promenade is one of the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein; the adjacent spa park with its mature trees is freely accessible year-round. In summer, beach chairs are set up; the water quality of the fjord at this section is regularly classified as good (EU Bathing Water Register).
Holnis Peninsula
Holnis is a flat peninsula in the Kleines Noor and is home to the Holnis Cliff – with heights of up to 23 metres, it is the northernmost steep coast of Germany on the Baltic Sea. The nature reserve is a habitat for meadow breeders and migratory birds. The beach at the foot of the cliff is accessible on foot; dogs must be kept on a leash in parts of the peninsula.
Fördeland Therme Glücksburg
The thermal and leisure pool is located in the centre of Glücksburg and is open year-round. It offers indoor and outdoor pools with views of the fjord and surrounding forest, as well as a sauna area. Inquire about opening hours and rates with the operator.
Flensburg City Centre & Harbour
Flensburg is located about 10 kilometres south of Glücksburg; the connection is via bus line 21. The city centre is known for Norderstraße as a historic merchant street, the Flensburg rum tradition, and the maritime museum at the harbour. The harbour itself is a lively destination with old wooden ships and numerous restaurants.
Kollund & Sønderhav (Denmark)
On the Danish side of the fjord lie the small fjord villages of Kollund and Sønderhav – about 15 minutes' drive from Glücksburg. Both places have harbours, bathing jetties, and quiet beach stretches directly on the fjord. A border crossing is possible with an EU ID card or passport; Denmark is not in the Eurozone (Danish krone).
