7 Things to Do Around Glücksburg That Are Worth It in Autumn and Winter Too

Glücksburg on the Flensburg Fjord sits between Denmark and the Baltic Sea and offers concrete day-trip options even outside summer – from certified hiking trails to the thermal spa in Flensburg. This list is for guests using a lodge as a base who want to actively explore the region.

1

Fördesteig trail – Glücksburg / Holnis peninsula stage

The Fördesteig is a roughly 100-kilometre certified hiking trail from Flensburg to Kappeln. The section across the Holnis peninsula north of Glücksburg is considered especially scenic: narrow paths right along the fjord shore, views towards Denmark, and barely any oncoming traffic outside summer. Access points are within walking distance from Glücksburg.

2

Glücksburg Water Castle

Glücksburg Castle is one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and stands on an artificial island in the castle lake. It is the town's landmark and can be seen from the outside all year round. Opening hours for the interior vary seasonally; the castle administration provides current information directly.

3

Fördeland Therme Flensburg

The Fördeland Therme is located in Flensburg, about 15 minutes' drive from Glücksburg, and is open year-round. It offers indoor and outdoor pools as well as sauna areas. For off-season guests it is a convenient complement to a stay in a lodge with its own sauna.

4

Flensburg town centre – Nordermarkt and harbour area

Flensburg is the nearest city (about 10 km south) with a distinctly Danish-influenced town-centre atmosphere. The Nordermarkt area and the old town around St. Nikolai church offer café culture and shopping regardless of the season. Flensburg harbour with its historic warehouse buildings is a well-known photo spot.

5

Glücksburg beach – main beach and side beaches

Glücksburg's main beach is just a few minutes' walk from the town centre. In autumn and winter it is almost deserted; for fans of beach walks without the bathing season, this is the ideal time. The beach is unguarded and freely accessible.

6

Holnis peninsula nature reserve

The Holnis peninsula north of Glücksburg ends in the Holnis cliff coast – one of the few cliff coasts on the Flensburg Fjord. The area is a nature reserve; paths are signposted. In autumn migratory birds rest here, which makes it especially attractive for nature-interested guests.

7

Day trip to Sønderjylland / South Jutland (Denmark)

The Danish border is less than 20 minutes' drive from Glücksburg. The small town of Sønderborg on the Alssund (about 45 minutes), with the Dybbøl monument and Sønderborg Castle, is a classic day trip for guests who want to explore the German-Danish border region. No border-crossing document is required for EU citizens (Schengen).
