Fishing the Flensburg Fjord: 7 Things Anglers Should Know Before Travelling to Glücksburg

The Flensburg Fjord is regarded by coastal anglers as one of the best sea-trout waters in Schleswig-Holstein. The main season runs from September to April, when trout hunt close to shore. Glücksburg sits right in the middle of it – with direct access to shallow shorelines, steep banks and the natural surroundings that attract trout.

1

Sea trout as the main target species

The Flensburger Förde is primarily known as a sea trout fishery. The fish migrate from the open Baltic Sea into the fjord in autumn and stay until spring. In addition, cod (stock has been declining for years, observe closed seasons), flatfish, and occasionally sea bass can be caught.

2

Season: September to April is the core period

Sea trout are found near the coast from September to April. October and November are considered particularly productive by local anglers. In summer, the fish stay in deeper waters; surf fishing from the shore is then less successful.

3

Fishing license and regulations

In Germany, a state fishing license (issued by the local municipality's regulatory office) and a fishing permit for the respective body of water are mandatory. For the Förde, different permits are required depending on the section of the shore. The Anglerverein Glücksburg e.V. and the Kreis Fisheries Office Schleswig-Flensburg provide information.

4

Accessible shore sections around Glücksburg

The city beach of Glücksburg and the shore sections towards Holnis are accessible on foot. The Holnis peninsula (east, a few kilometers away) offers steep banks and gravel beaches – classic sea trout locations. Many sections are accessible via the Fördestieg hiking trail.

5

Equipment: Light and mobile

Coastal fishing on the Förde works with a light spinning rod (2.70–3.20 m, WG 10–40 g), small spinners and wobblers in silver/green, and waders for entering the shallow shore. Boat fishing is possible but less relevant for shore anglers; capsizing is not common on the Förde.

6

Combination with the Fördestieg

The Fördestieg (approx. 95 km, from Kupfermühle to Langballigau) opens up many fjord shores that are not accessible by car. Anglers who start early in the morning can combine hiking and fishing – both activities benefit from the same time window shortly after sunrise.

7

Accommodation logistics: What makes a lodge better here

Fishing tours start early – often before 6 am. A lodge with its own entrance, cooling facilities for the catch (catch-and-release is common but not mandatory), and uncomplicated coming and going fits better than a hotel with breakfast times and reception opening hours. Equipment cleaning and drying facilities outside the actual room are a practical advantage.
