Sailing, Hiking, Cycling: The Best Activities Around Ostseelodges Glücksburg
Ostseelodges Glücksburg sit directly on the Flensburg Fjord – one of the most wind-rich yet sheltered coastal waters in northern Germany. Staying here puts sailing, hiking on the Fördestieg trail, cycling along the coast and day trips to Denmark literally on your doorstep. This list covers the seven most accessible activities guests can pursue directly from the lodge – no hire car, no lengthy planning.
Sailing on the Flensburger Förde
The Flensburger Förde is considered one of the best sailing areas in Northern Germany. Glücksburg is home to one of the region's oldest sailing schools – day trips and multi-hour tours can be booked, and previous sailing experience is not required for sailing tours. The Förde is fjord-like and sheltered, yet windy enough for challenging sailing. Anyone who has ever turned the bow into the wind and seen Glücksburg from the water understands why the castle is known as a water palace.
Hiking on the Fördestieg
The Fördestieg is a marked long-distance hiking trail along the Flensburger Förde. The section from Glücksburg towards Holnis-Kliff is one of the most impressive: steep coastlines, beech forests, and Förde panoramas. The Holnis-Kliff, as the endpoint of the section, is the northernmost point of the German mainland and thus a destination with a real exclamation mark. Total distance Glücksburg–Holnis: about 10 km, easy.
Cycling along the Förde Coast
The coastal cycle paths around Glücksburg are well-developed and mostly flat to slightly hilly. The route from Glücksburg to Flensburg (about 12 km) is particularly popular, leading through forests and along the Förde. In Flensburg itself, the old town with its Danish-influenced architecture and the historic harbor area are worth a visit. Bicycles can be rented on site.
Day Trip to Denmark / Sønderjylland
The Danish border is less than 30 minutes' drive from Glücksburg. Sønderjylland – the southernmost Danish region – is known for its German-Danish history, traditional farming villages, and a quieter way of traveling. Those who want to get to know the region without planning a separate vacation in Denmark will find the ideal introduction here. A visit to the Border Museum in Kruså or the cities of Aabenraa and Sønderborg can also be arranged as a half-day tour.
Visit Glücksburg Castle
Glücksburg Castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and dates back to the 16th century. It stands on a small island in an artificial lake – the image of a white castle reflected in the water is iconic. In summer, the castle offers guided tours, special exhibitions, and occasionally concerts and open-air events. From the Ostseelodges area, the castle is within walking or cycling distance.
Stand-Up Paddling and Swimming at the Förde
The Flensburger Förde is clean enough for swimming in many places – the beach area near the Ostseelodges is one of the most popular. Stand-Up Paddling boards can be rented in Glücksburg. Paddling in the Förde offers a different perspective on the coast, forests, and occasionally passing sailboats. Particularly recommended in the early morning – when hardly anyone is on the water.
Glücksburg Castle Park and Rosarium
The Glücksburg Castle Park is one of the few parks in Schleswig-Holstein that houses a rosarium with over 500 rose varieties. The rosarium mainly blooms from June to September and is freely accessible. The park itself offers shade, benches, and a direct view of the castle – a quiet counterpoint to the active daily program and ideal for an early evening stroll.
