Summer on the Flensburg Fjord: Why a Lodge in Glücksburg Is the Right Base

One place, three water worlds

Glücksburg sits where the Flensburg Fjord narrows and opens toward Denmark. What makes it special in summer: you have simultaneous access to a sheltered fjord beach with calm, shallow water, forest paths directly behind the lodges, and open sea breeze drifting in from the Kattegat. The beach below Glücksburg is not a classic sandy beach in the North Sea sense. The fjord water warms to up to 20 degrees Celsius in summer, and the ground alternates between sand and smooth pebbles. For families with children and for people who prefer calm open water to busy bathing areas, this is an advantage.

What to do in the morning, afternoon and evening

The rhythm of a summer day in Glücksburg follows no fixed schedule. In the morning you can walk from the lodge grounds to the water in a few minutes. The fjord lies in the shade of the hills early in the day – good for running, quiet for a coffee by the shore. At midday it is worth heading inland: the Holnis Peninsula, around 12 kilometres to the north, offers one of the most striking cliffs on the Flensburg Fjord and is reachable by bicycle. The Glücksburg Rosarium, right in town, is at its peak bloom in June and July.

In the afternoon, Glücksburg Castle – one of the best-known moated castles in northern Europe – is worth a visit; it sits directly in town. In the evening the sunset faces north-west: from Glücksburg you look across the fjord toward Denmark, and the light falls differently than on the open Baltic.

Lodge rather than hotel: what that means in practice in summer

• Border location: The Danish border is around 30 kilometres away. Sønderborg and Aabenraa are reachable within an hour – a genuine day trip to a neighbouring country, not just a footnote.
• Fjord rather than open sea: The water is more sheltered, the waves smaller, and swimming is easier for all age groups than on the open Baltic.
• Forest and water at the same time: If you want to run in the forest in the morning and swim at midday, you do not need to move accommodation or take the car.

With a dog in summer
